  1. What is the difference between Motrin and Ibuprofen?

RPh replies: Motrin and Ibuprofen are the exact same medicine. If the box says Motrin turn it over and read the active ingredients and it will read Ibuprofen 200mg. This medicine is used as a pain reliever and a fever reducer.

2. What do I take if I have a stuffy nose?

RPh replies: The best over the counter medicine to take is a decongestant. Look at the active ingriedents on the box and it should read pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine. My third choice is nasal sprays (eg. Afrin)

3. What is the best medicine for runny nose and itchy eyes?

RPh replies: This is an easy question because the FDA has recently approved Zyrtec and Claritin as over the counter. So, what you are looking for is an anti-histamine. Patients respond that Claritin-12 hour is better than the 24 hour. Also, some say the Zyrtec makes them sleepy. Don't forget about one of the drugs that has been around for the longest which is Benadryl. Caution there maybe drowsiness with this one also.

4. What is the best cough medicine?

Rph replies: Look for Dextromethorphan and Guuaifenesin on the box. These are often found under the name Mucinex Dm, Robitussin Dm or sometimes Desylm. Desylm is my family favorite because it taste great and works for 12 hours.

5. What can my family use for diarrhea?

RPh replies: Imodium is my drug of choice. The active ingredient on the back of the box is Loperamide.

6. Why is my doctor writing a prescription for Ibuprofen 800mg when this is over the counter?

RPh replies: The over the counter ibuprofen is only 200mg and also your insurance might cover the 800mg at a lower cost than what you will pay for over the counter.

7. What is a good sleep aid over the counter?

RPh replies: My favorites are Benadryl and Melatonin. Benadryl has been around for a very long time and sometimes one teaspoon of the children's liquid is a good boost to help sleep. Also, melatonin is a naturally produced by the pineal gland.

8. Should Amoxil suspension be put in the fridge ?

RPh replies: Yes and also should be discarded after 10 days.
